Eligibility Criteria

The number of places in the programme is limited to 30 students. Admission to the programme is based on availability, timely application (meeting the deadline), motivation and qualifications of the applicant and is also subject to the general admission requirements of the University of Vienna.


  • Candidates must hold at least a bachelor degree (180 ECTS) of any discipline.**
    Persons without any academic degree need to prove five years of working experience in a field related to human rights.

  • Excellent command of written and spoken English (detailed information available below)

  • Experience in the human rights field is not compulsory, but an asset

**If you complete your degree after the application deadline you can still apply for the programme start in September 2017. However, please send us your most current transcripts and a confirmation of your university stating your expected graduation date.


Applicants have to complete the application form and have to attach copies of all documents listed below. If scanned and e-mailed, we accept only complete applications with all documents in one single pdf document in the following order:

  1. Application form
  2. Letter of motivation
  3. CV
  4. Academic transcripts including final grades1) (all transcripts or translations there of must be either in English or German)
  5. Copy of your University Diploma1) OR proof of relevant work experience (5 years)
  6. Copy of valid passport 
  7. Excerpt of a few pages (2-10 pages) of an English paper (essay, academic paper, publication, etc. of any topic)
  8. Proof of English language proficiency (in case of non-native speakers who did not graduate from an English language programme)

    The following documents are optional:
  9. Housing form (if you wish to book housing through our programme)
  10. Letter(s) of recommendation

1) All documents must be either in German or English and fully legalised/legalised by apostille. The type of legalisation depends on the country your documents were issued in. A list of the required legalisation types per country can be found here:

Admission process

  1. Pre-selection of applications according to eligibility criteria, completeness and quality of requested documents
  2. Invitation to a personal interview (via video chat if person is outside of Vienna, face-to-face if person is in and around Vienna)
  3. Final selection of candidates
  4. Notification of Acceptance by Scientific Director

Language Proficiency

Those whose native language is not English or who did not complete an academic degree where English language was the medium of instruction have to provide one of the following English language tests:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
    Minimum requirement of internet based test: 100
    Reading: 20, Listening: 20, Speaking: 20, Writing: 20
  • IELTS (International English Testing System)
    Minimum requirement: 6.5
  • CAE (Cambridge English Language Assessment)
    Minimum requirement: A-C

All applicants need to submit an excerpt of a few pages of an English paper they wrote. It can be an essay, scientific paper, publication, etc. of any topic and should be at least two A4 pages long (max. 10 pages). Applicants may use material they have written during their studies.
